A coloured stone qualifies as a gemstone due to its beauty, durability, rarity and colour. Coloured gems are separated into three categories Precious/Semi- Precious and Ornamental. All gems come in different shades of colour and hardness. The majority of gemstones are minerals, (important exceptions - pearls and coral are of animal origin; jet and amber are vegetable). These minerals have been crystallised as a result of high temperature and pressures exerted by nature on the elements that form the earth's crust.
Colour - The strength and even consistency of the gems colour is extremely important.
Cut - A coloured gemstone is always cut for best colour. The proper cutting emphasises the richness of the gemstone colour. Proportions of the cut are extremely important.
